I recently started following Elske Howler’s blog. I read and enjoyed her book, Left Behind, and was excited to find her online. She recently had a post about the ABCs of Writing. It was a great way to connect with other writers, and I learned a lot, so I decided to do my own version of the ABCs of Writing. Mine will be the ABCs of Writing My Book, and it will have some ideas about writing in general but will also include information unique to the book I will soon be publishing. I look forward to hearing your ideas as I share mine.
Today, I will start with the letter A for Albany, New York. My book is a historical novel about an incredible woman named Catalyntje Trico. During the Spanish Inquisition, she was born in Prs, Hainaut, in the southern Netherlands, now part of Belgium. Her situation became unsafe, so she and her younger sister fled to Amsterdam. She decided to take a chance and sail to the New World to begin a new life in the Dutch Colony of New Netherland. Approximately thirty families on the ship landed in 1624 in the southern part of today’s Manhattan. Catalyntje and her husband, Joris, were assigned to sail up the Noort River, now the Hudson River, and settled near Fort Orange. Today, this area is Albany, New York. The State University Of New York (SUNY) now stands near the Hudson River, where the fort once existed.
What do you know about the Dutch Colony of New Netherland?
