Elisabeth is my editor and one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever met. She is 90 years old and is currently publishing her own book about Washington Irving. She has a Ph.D. in English, taught at the college level, and has an impressive knowledge of the English language. So she can correct me on my subordinating conjunctions and let me know if an antecedent is missing. Additionally, she was raised in the Netherlands, so she is well acquainted with the history and customs of that area as well as the colony of New Netherland, where my book takes place.
Besides being a brilliant woman, Elisabeth is also delightful to correspond with. Her lengthy emails are filled with historical information, and each is a history lesson for me. As a history teacher, I savor every word. When the two of us get together on a Zoom call, she has many incredible stories about writing, life, history, family, etc. It is always a treat to visit with her.
It has been an incredible experience working with Elisabeth. Even though we have never met in person, we have become good friends. She and I live on opposite sides of the country, but because of technology, we are able to enjoy this unique connection.
Have you ever become good friends with someone you have never met? How did it happen, and do you still keep in touch?
