September 11th

This day brings many memories to our minds. The obvious one, if you are old enough, is the tragedy in New York, the planes, and The Towers. That is one of those events that you remember exactly what you were doing and where you were when you heard about it. Several years ago, when I discussed this horrific event with my students, they were still very interested in it and saw it as a turning point of sorts. However, students haven’t paid much attention to it for the past few years, probably because they never experienced it. I have realized how difficult it can be to share the depth of some events with those who have not gone through them.

Another important event to me today is the anniversary of the death of one of the most remarkable women from history that I know about, Catalyntje Trico; she died on September 11th, 1689. After several years of research, I recently published a historical fiction book about her. This novel covers her life from when she was seventeen until her death at age eighty-three. Catalyntje is not famous in history books but her courage, strong-will and kindness are truly inspiring.

One of the novel’s most challenging parts to write was the day Catalyntje died. I actually wrote this part midway through writing the book because I knew it needed to be handled well. Then, after writing that section, I rewrote it at least 25 times, trying to imagine over and over again what that day would have been like for Catalyntje.

So, as you look back on the events that are important to you today, take time to be mindful of them. Think about how they still affect your life and what you can do to remember them honorably each year.
